LOUISIANA

Louisiana and New Orleans are, we think, two of the most misunderstood states and cities in the entire country.
We also think they are the perfect places to begin this companies long-term exploration into all things "small towns" outside of our home region of Western, New York.
Louisiana is such a deeply rich, varied and beautiful state and has so many geographic, sociological, cultural, architectural and historical facets that we're sure we could spend the rest of our lives exploring it all and still barely scratch the surface. But nonetheless less, we're gonna try.
If you're a resident of the state or the greater New Orleans area, please feel free to drop us an email down at the right hand side of the footer of this page and let me know your idea. We're always open to suggestions for future episodes and stories.
No one knows the state and city more than it's longtime residents and it'll be great to hear from you and what you think we should cover on this journey toward understanding the great state of Louisiana and one of the most unique and cultural significant cities on the entire planet.

A Bit
More On
Why I Created
These
Two
Series

Drawing a parallel between Louisiana's small towns and the distinct neighborhoods of New Orleans was effortless for us here. Let's delve into why we find these two series so compelling to produce:

Why a TV Series about Louisiana's Small Towns?
Many of the same reasons we discussed for my two Western New York series apply here, but with a unique Louisiana flavor:

  • Capturing a Distinct Culture: Louisiana's small towns are steeped in a unique blend of Cajun, Creole, and Southern cultures. "Small Town Louisiana" will vividly showcase: these traditions through food, music, festivals, language, and the everyday lives of residents. It's a chance to explore a cultural landscape unlike anywhere else in the United States.

  • Exploring the Beauty of the Bayou and Beyond: Louisiana boasts stunning natural landscapes, from the mysterious bayous and swamps to rolling hills and historic plantations. "Small Town Louisiana" will use these settings as a backdrop to the stories, highlighting the connection between the people and their environment.

  • Preserving Endangered Ways of Life: Some of Louisiana's small towns are facing challenges like coastal erosion, economic shifts, and the loss of cultural heritage. "Small Town Louisiana" will document these realities while celebrating the resilience and determination of the people striving to preserve their way of life.

  • Sharing Unique Culinary Traditions: Food is central to Louisiana culture. Both "Small Town Louisiana" and "Small Town New Orleans" will take deep-dives into the distinctive cuisines of Louisana's small towns and New Orleans neighborhoods, showcasing local specialties, family recipes, and the stories behind them. Think crawfish boils, gumbo cook-offs, and the secrets of the perfect étouffée!

  • Highlighting the Music and Arts Scene: From zydeco and swamp pop to folk art and craft traditions, Louisiana's small towns are often hubs of vibrant artistic expression. "Small Town Louisiana" will feature local musicians, artists, and artisans, showcasing their talents and contributions to the cultural landscape.

Why a TV Series about New Orleans Neighborhoods as "Small Towns"?

New Orleans, while a major city, is renowned for its incredibly distinct and tight-knit neighborhoods, each with its own personality, traditions, and sense of community. Here's why this approach will be captivating:

  • Revealing the Microcosms within the Metropolis: Each New Orleans neighborhood – the French Quarter, the Bywater, the Garden District, Tremé, Uptown, Mid-City, and many more – feels like its own self-contained world. They have their own architectural styles, local hangouts, annual traditions (like neighborhood parades), and even their own unique slang and social dynamics. "Small Town New Orleans" will peel back the layers of the city by exploring these individual "villages."

  • Showcasing the Deep Roots and History: Many New Orleans neighborhoods have centuries of history, shaped by different waves of immigration, cultural influences, and historical events. Each neighborhood has its own stories etched into its streets, buildings, and the memories of its residents.

  • Exploring the Unique Social Fabric: The social connections within New Orleans neighborhoods are often incredibly strong. People know their neighbors, support local businesses, and participate in community events. "Small Town New Orleans" will delve into these close-knit relationships and the unique social dynamics that define each neighborhood.

  • Highlighting the Neighborhood-Specific Culture: Just like small towns, each New Orleans neighborhood has its own distinct cultural vibe. This is reflected in its music scene, its food, its festivals, and the way people interact. "Small Town New Orleans" will capture this diversity and celebrate the unique character of each area.

  • Finding Universal Themes in Local Contexts: By exploring the "small town" feel within a major city, the series will tap into universal themes of community, belonging, identity, and the importance of local connections, but within the vibrant and unique context of New Orleans.

  • Offering a Fresh Perspective on New Orleans: While many shows focus on the broader image of New Orleans, "Small Town New Orleans" will dive into the nuances of its neighborhoods and offer a more intimate and authentic portrayal of the city and its people.

The similarities between the rural small towns and the urban "small towns" of New Orleans are viscerally compelling and exciting for me to explore.
Our goal is to highlight the diverse ways community and identity are formed and maintained and how that's reflected in the city of New Orleans.
