A.A.'s BLOG

Small towns are deeply, vitally important to our society and culture and are mostly overlooked in the modern media landscape.
But my hope is that slowly, over time, this Blog, along with our shows and their companion papers and podcasts, can turn into a solid source of inspiration and information for those looking to learn more about small towns and who are maybe even considering a move to one.

My Blog contains insights, thoughts, rants and the occasional, subject-appropriate article that I think that our fans and supporters might be interested in.
   Now, onto the Blog... ~A

The need for specific state-wide TV series about small towns

The
Need for
a State-Wide
TV Series About
Small Towns

The need for a specific, state-wide, TV series about small towns is compelling, driven by a desire for deeper, more nuanced storytelling and a celebration of the unique character found within individual states. Here's why such series are needed:

Highlighting Distinct State Identities:
  • Each state possesses a unique blend of history, culture, geography, and traditions that shape its small towns. A state-wide series can delve into these specific nuances, offering a richer and more authentic portrayal than a generic "small town USA" setting. For example, the atmosphere and concerns of a small fishing town in Maine would differ significantly from a farming community in Kansas or a historic mining town in Colorado.

  • State-specific series can explore local folklore, dialects, and customs that are often overlooked in broader portrayals. This can create a stronger sense of place and resonate more deeply with residents of that state.

Showcasing Regional Diversity Within States:

  • Even within a single state, there can be significant regional variations in culture and lifestyle. A state-wide series could explore these diverse pockets, highlighting the contrasts and similarities between small towns in different parts of the state. For instance, a series set in New York could explore the differences between the rural communities of the Adirondacks, the Catskills, and the Finger Lakes.

Addressing State-Specific Issues and Opportunities:

  • Small towns within a state often face similar economic, environmental, and social challenges unique to that state's policies and circumstances. A focused series can explore these issues in a relatable and impactful way, fostering dialogue and awareness within the state.

  • Similarly, state-wide series can highlight the unique opportunities and innovations emerging in small towns within a specific state, showcasing local resilience and ingenuity.

Fostering Local Pride and Tourism:

  • Series that authentically depict the beauty and character of a state's small towns can instill a sense of pride among residents and encourage tourism. Seeing familiar landscapes and local culture reflected on screen can be a powerful affirmation for communities.

  • The success of series like "Home Town" in Laurel, Mississippi, demonstrates how a show focused on a specific small town can generate significant interest and revitalize the local economy.

Untapped Storytelling Potential:

  • The vast landscape of small towns within each state holds countless untold stories and unique characters. State-wide series can tap into this rich vein of potential narratives, offering fresh perspectives and compelling dramas, comedies, or mysteries rooted in specific locations.

Moving Beyond Stereotypes:

  • Generic portrayals of small towns can often rely on stereotypes. State-specific series have the opportunity to move beyond these clichés and present more nuanced and realistic depictions of small-town life, acknowledging both its charms and its challenges.

While series like "Gilmore Girls" (Connecticut), "Friday Night Lights" (Texas), and "Stranger Things" (Indiana) have successfully captured the essence of small towns within specific states, the need remains for more series that are explicitly framed around exploring the diverse tapestry of small towns across an entire state. This approach can offer a deeper appreciation for the unique character and stories found within each state's hidden gems.
